Las Cruces

After two days in Tubac, we set off for Las Cruces and the first exploration of a part of New Mexico we'd never visited.  We were thrilled when we pulled into the park.

What a great spot!

Wait - what????  The RV next to us was the exact same model!  As we were setting up our neighbor came out and introduced himself - he was Steve from Florida.  He was heading west to Tucson, where we'd just come from, and then on to San Jose, our home town.  We visited for awhile, shared stories, and we learned some tips and tricks.  We've said that we don't know what we don't know.  But we're learning!

Which one is ours?

We were fortunate to have a great RV store right down the street.  We went in to pick up some supplies and learned a lot from the sales person, Tammie.  Too bad we weren't going to be here longer so we could get some service work taken care of.

We saw a tip from another camper that if we were there on Saturday (we were!) to take in the Farmer's Market downtown.  So the next morning we were off.  I think the entire population was there!  We came across a family from outside Silver City who sold bread so we stocked up so that we had bread in the freezer.

From there we went to Mesilla which was right down the street from the RV park.  What a great little town with a lot of history.

We stopped at a building and learned that it was once the Capitol of Arizona and New Mexico.  Since Ron is a Billy the Kid enthusiast, he was interested in this.  More on this on our next stop.

There were several restaurants in the square so we decided to stop for lunch.  We'd heard about this place so we stopped here.

Apparently, lots of people had heard about it because it was an hour wait at 2:00 in the afternoon.  It's true that we're retired but nope, not gonna spend our time waiting.  So we moved on and found this.

We were happy we stumbled across this as the ambience was great and the food was even better.  And the best part is that the portions were so large we'd have leftovers for days to come.

Because it seems that retired people spend their time in new cities scoping out restaurants, the next day we stumbled across another gem.  And even closer to our RV park!

The young lady who served us was a delight.  Turns out she grew up in Yuba City, California which is where my brother lives.  We could have stayed there all day soaking in the sun on the patio.  But alas, it was time to get back so that we could move on the next day.

What we learned:  From Steve we learned that RV parks have variable water pressure (and this one was HIGH) so best to use a water pressure regulator to ensure the pressure wasn't too high when the fresh water tank was filled.  If it's too high, it can damage the seals inside the water tank.  Thanks for the tip, Steve!

Water pressure should be between 40-60 PSI when coming into the tank

A great 3 days in Las Cruces!

  1. Everyone thinks camping is such a carefree life. It sounds like there is so much more to think about than we realize. So are you honing in on a future retirement place yet?
