Santa Rosa

After playing tourists, we arrived at our RV park in Santa Rosa.

It was right on the main street but our site wasn't bad.

The next morning we set out for Fort Sumner, the site of Billy the Kid's grave.

A little closer up so it's easier to read.

And this explains why it is called the Elusive Grave.

I understand why the grave is fenced off.

Billy's "pals" died before he did so it was decided to bury Billy near them.

After we left the cemetery, we stopped in town at the Billy the Kid museum.  It sounded a bit cheesey but we thought it was worth a stop.

What a treasure!  The museum was started in 1953 by Ed Sweet and along with his wife, Ed managed the museum until his death in 1974.  Mrs. Sweet, along with help from her son Don, managed the museum until her retirement in 1979.  At that time Don and his wife, Lula, took over and added their son, Tim, to the mix.  We spent quite a bit of time talking with Tim and learned about some of the artifacts.

An amazing collection of rifles.

But the best was Billy's rifle.

And cars - holy cow!

On the way out of town we stopped for lunch.

Sort of a dive but hey, we were in small town New Mexico!  The burgers were marginal at best.

The next day we took a drive and ended up at Blue Hole.

This is a spot where people train to scuba dive.  Unfortunately, no one was there that day.

Back to the park - it was windy but it didn't seem to bother the cat in our neighbor's rig.

And the next day we're off to Amarillo!
